Chicken & Meat Ideas

Chilli jam really shines with chicken and meat. The sweetness caramelises as it cooks, while the chilli adds just enough heat to keep things interesting – perfect for everyday dinners that don’t feel boring.

Some easy and delicious ways to use chilli jam with meat include:

  • Sticky Chilli Jam Chicken Tray Bake
  • Sticky chicken thighs or wings, brushed with chilli jam during the last 10 minutes of cooking
  • Chilli jam pork chops, pan-fried and finished with a glossy glaze
  • Glazed lamb cutlets, especially great on the BBQ
  • Beef stir fry, where chilli jam is stirred through with soy sauce and a splash of lime juice
  • Chicken schnitzel, delicious served as a condiment on the side to ramp up the flavour

It’s also a great shortcut ingredient if you enjoy bold, nutty flavours, chilli jam pairs beautifully with satay-style dishes and works as a quick flavour booster when you want something comforting but easy.

Crispy Chicken Schnitzel with Panko & Seeds – great served on the side with some Kewpie mayonnaise
Satay Chicken Wings (Using Jimmy’s Sate Sauce) – thin jam out with a little water and use a dipping sauce
Crispy Pork Belly Bahn Mi – spread or drizzled over the cut side of the rolls
Grilled Thai Chicken Skewers – perfect dipping sauce with some lime or lemon juice
Portuguese Chicken Burgers (Just like Oporto!) – instead of Peri Peri Sauce – Use chilli jam instead

Seafood Pairings

Chilli jam and seafood are a surprisingly good match. The gentle sweetness balances salty, briny flavours beautifully, while the chilli adds warmth without overpowering more delicate fish.

Some easy ways to use chilli jam with seafood include:

  • Chilli jam prawns, quickly sautéed with garlic and a squeeze of lime
  • Grilled or pan-fried fish, brushed lightly with chilli jam right at the end of cooking
  • Seafood dipping sauce, by stirring chilli jam into soy sauce or fish sauce with a splash of citrus
  • Sticky seafood skewers, perfect for the BBQ or grill

Chilli jam works especially well with prawns, scallops and firm white fish, and it’s a great way to add flavour without masking the natural sweetness of the seafood.

Chilli Jam will make the perfect dipping sauce served with these:

  • Crispy Prawn Balls
  • Crispy Thai Prawn and Pork Spring Rolls
  • Salmon & Potato Cakes with Lemon Aioli Mayonnaise

Breakfast & Brunch Ideas

Chilli jam isn’t just for lunch and dinner – it works surprisingly well with eggs and simple breakfast dishes. The sweet heat cuts through rich, savoury flavours and instantly lifts everyday breakfasts.

Some easy ways to use chilli jam for breakfast and brunch include:

  • Fried or scrambled eggs on toast, finished with a spoonful of chilli jam
  • Avocado toast, topped with chilli jam and a squeeze of lemon
  • Egg and bacon rolls, with chilli jam in place of tomato sauce
  • Poached eggs, drizzled lightly with chilli jam instead of chilli oil
  • Breakfast wraps, stirred through eggs or spread onto the wrap before filling

It’s especially good when you want something a little different without turning breakfast into a big cooking project.

Here is some great breakfast and brunch recipes to try Chilli Jam with:

Sauces, Marinades & Dressings

This is where chilli jam really earns its keep. A spoonful can transform a simple sauce or dressing into something bold, glossy and full of flavour.

Try using chilli jam:

  • As a stir fry sauce base, mixed with soy sauce, garlic and a little ginger
  • In marinades, combined with oil, lime juice or vinegar and a pinch of salt
  • Stirred into mayonnaise, for burgers, wraps or sandwiches
  • Whisked into salad dressings, especially for crunchy Asian-style salads
  • As a glaze, brushed over meat or vegetables towards the end of cooking

Homemade chilli jam is especially good here because you can control the sweetness and heat, making it easy to adjust sauces to suit your taste.

  • Vietnamese Chicken Salad – make an easy dressing with chilli jam, water, lime juice and a dash of fish sauce
  • Portuguese Chicken Burgers (Just like Oporto!) – use instead of Peri Peri Sauce!
  • Beef & Veggie Rissoles – brown patties in a frying pan then brush with chilli jam and bake in the oven until cooked through and glazed.

Snacks, Appetisers & Entertaining

Chilli jam is brilliant when you’re entertaining or need something quick that still feels a bit special. It pairs especially well with creamy, crispy or cheesy foods, making it an easy crowd-pleaser.

Some simple ways to use chilli jam for snacks and appetisers include:

  • Cream cheese and chilli jam dip, served with crackers or toasted bread
  • Baked brie or camembert, topped with a spoonful of chilli jam and nuts
  • Spring rolls or dumplings, with chilli jam used as a dipping sauce
  • Sausage rolls or party pies, brushed lightly with chilli jam before baking
  • Crispy prawns or fritters, served with chilli jam on the side

It’s the kind of ingredient that turns very simple food into something people ask about ~ without adding extra work in the kitchen.

Easy Weeknight Dinners

If you’re short on time but still want big flavour, chilli jam is a fantastic shortcut. A spoonful or two can lift a basic dinner into something warm, sticky and satisfying.

Try using chilli jam in:

  • Chilli jam fried rice, stirred through right at the end
  • One-pan chicken tray bakes, mixed with oil and vegetables before roasting
  • Quick noodle dishes, tossed with chilli jam, soy sauce and a splash of water
  • Simple stir fries, where chilli jam replaces multiple sauces
  • Weeknight chicken or pork dishes, finished with a quick glaze in the pan

Because chilli jam already contains sweetness, acidity and heat, it helps cut down the ingredient list ~ perfect for busy nights when you want dinner on the table fast.

Can You Cook with Chilli Jam?

Yes – and it’s actually one of the best ways to use it. Chilli jam holds up well to heat, but because it contains sugar, it’s best used with a little care.

When cooking with chilli jam:

  • Add it towards the end of cooking if you’re glazing or brushing, to avoid burning
  • Use it earlier in sauces or marinades where there’s liquid to balance the sugar
  • Keep the heat moderate when pan-frying or grilling

Used properly, chilli jam adds a glossy finish and deep flavour without needing extra sweeteners or spices.

Store-Bought vs Homemade Chilli Jam

Store-bought chilli jam is convenient and works well in a pinch, especially for quick sauces or dipping. That said, homemade chilli jam has a few big advantages.

With homemade chilli jam, you can:

  • Control the sweetness and heat
  • Adjust the texture to be thick and sticky
  • Avoid overly sharp vinegar flavours
  • Make a batch that suits your cooking style

If you cook with chilli jam often, having a homemade version in the fridge makes a huge difference to both flavour and versatility.

FAQ’s

Is chilli jam very spicy?

Not usually. Most chilli jam is more sweet than hot, with gentle warmth rather than intense heat. You can always adjust the spice level if making it yourself.

Can I use chilli jam instead of sweet chilli sauce?

Yes, in many dishes. Chilli jam is usually thicker and richer, so it works especially well in glazes, marinades and stir fries.

How long does chilli jam last once opened?

Stored in the fridge, chilli jam will keep for several weeks, often longer if it’s homemade and handled cleanly.

Can chilli jam be frozen?

Yes. Chilli jam freezes well in small containers or jars, making it easy to defrost as needed.

Once you start cooking with chilli jam, it quickly becomes one of those ingredients you reach for again and again. From quick weeknight dinners to snacks, sauces and entertaining, it’s an easy way to add big flavour with very little effort.
